福师答案《大学英语(1)》福建师范大学2022年8月课程考试期末考试A卷3(奥鹏)

It is implied in the last paragraph that_________ .

A. people who possess information will have more material advantage and be more wealth

B. the ability to read and write will not be as the knowledge of computers

C. information or knowledge will be more important in manufacturing than in services

D. people with information or knowledge will be the potential creator of wealth in the new era

From the last paragraph we can learn that __

A. some pipes have to be re-arranged in winter

B. the system can do more than warming up the building

C. the exchangers will pick up heat from the street surface

D. less heat may be collected in winter than in summer

正确答案:B

Animals other than humans have not developed communications comparable to human language. But is it possible that other animals have the capacity to learn a language if they are adequately taught? Obviously, this is a fascination notion. The idea of communicating directly with another species has long been a part of human folklore and children’s fantasies. But on a scientific level, the question of whether animals can learn a language is important primarily because it relates to the controversy()between the cognitive and the learning approaches to language. If language is dependent on and is actually an outgrowth of the intellectual structure of the human mind, there is the strong supposition that only humans are capable of using language. Therefore, Noam Chomsky and other psycholinguists have argued that only humans can learn a language, while most behaviorists feel that with sufficient patience it should be possible to teach an animal some sort of language. Although the two schools of thought clearly differ on this point, it is not really a crucial test of the two theories. If a chimpanzee can master a simple language all it would mean is that the chimp’s intellectual capacity and brain structure are more similar to ours than we thought. It would not necessarily imply that our intellectual structure is unimportant in our own mastery of language. Thus, teaching an animal language is an impressive demonstration of the power of learning techniques, but it is not evidence that language is developed entirely through learning. On the other hand, the question of whether other animals can learn a language is fascination in its own right, aside from its value as a test of the two theories of language development. Accordingly, whatever one’s position on the theoretical dispute, we must consider training an animal to use language a dramatic accomplishment.

36.Which of the following statements is the view of psycholinguists?

A. The cognitive view of language learning says that only human beings can learn language because it is an outgrowth of the structure of the human mind.

B. Other animals simply could master a language.

C. The animals intellectual capacity is much better than human beings.

D. Language is developed by learning.

37.The behaviorists’ view is that __________.

A. language is actually an outgrowth of intellectual structure of the animal’s mind

B. animals have not developed communications system

C. given enough patience, a man should be able to teach an animal some sort of language

D. only human beings can learn language

38.That an animal can master a simple language means that __________.

A. human’s intellectual structure is not important

B. animals’ intellectual capacity and brain structure are more similar to the humans’

C. the learning techniques are much more important

D. language is developed completely by learning

39.The main idea of paragraph two is ___________.

A. teaching a chimp language is not crucial test of the two theories

B. their brain structure is not similar to human

C. using various methods to let the chimp master a language

D. training a nonhuman to use language is an amazing accomplishment

40.The best title for this passage would be _________.

A. Animals’ language

B. Human’s language

C. Teaching Animals’ Language

D. Can Other Animals Acquire Language?

(阅读理解题)How do you acquire confidence? Speak English with friends first because with them you can speak freely without feeling shy. Then try your ability with your teachers and with foreigners if you have an opportunity to meet them.Don’t be afraid of mistakes.Nobody is above mistakes; and don’t be afraid to ask questions about things you don’t know. This is the way to acquire knowledge. Not until you begin to think in English rather than Chinese can you be said to know the language. This is not a superhuman achievement—only a question of practice.Thinking in English will help you to truly understand how the language is spoken.Read novels to build vocabulary, thus gaining confidence.Start with small volumes of 30 to 40 pages.Write down any new word you discover and look it up in your dictionary.Learn how to use the new word by making sentences with it.Bring the word to your teacher to have it explained more fully.Don’t be angry when you learn a new word today and forget it tomorrow. To forget is a natural process; to remember is unnatural and requires effort.Of 10 new words learnt in a day, only two or three will remain in the memory. The others you will forget and have to relearn. When learning them for the second time, they will come more easily, and this time you probably will remember nearly all of them.A small minority, however, may elude you again, and have to be learnt for a third time.Constant repetition is necessary.

In deed more and more schools are discovering that foreign languages are best taught in the lower grades.Young children often can learn several languages by being( )to them, while adults have a much harder time learning another language once the rules of their first language have become firmly fixed.

A.disclosed
B.revealed
C.immersed
D.exposed

答案:D
解析:
be exposed to“接触到”,是固定搭配。符合文意:年纪小的儿童可以通过接触多种语言而学会好几种语言……。A.disclose“揭示,泄露”;B.reveal“显示,透露”;C.immerse“沉浸,使陷入”。

Russian really is hard for lcarners, and a casual comparison might serve the conclusion that big, prestigious languages like Russian are complex. Just look, after all, at their rich, technical vocabularies, and the complex industrial societies that they serve.
But linguists who have compared languages systematically are struck by the opposite conclusion.
This is largely because linguists, unlike laypeople, focus on grammar, not vocabulary,Consider Berik, spoken in a few villages in eastern Papua. It may not have a word for“supernova”, but it drips with complex rules: a mandatory verb ending tells what time of day the action occurred, and another indicates the size of the direet object. Of
course these things can be said in English, but Berik requires them. Remote socictics may be materially simplc;“primitive”", their languages are not.
Systematically so: a study in 2010 of thousands of tongucs found that smaller languages have more Berik-style grammatical bits and pieces attached to words. By contrast, bigger ones tend to be like English or Mandarin, in which words change their form lttle ifat all. No one knows why, but a likely culprit is the very scale and ubiquity of such widely travelled languages.
As a language spreads, more foreigners come to learn it as adults (thanks to conquest and trade, for example). Since languages are more complex than they need to be, many of those adult learners will- Stalin-style- ignore some of the niceties where they can. If those newcomers have children, the children will often learn a slightly simpler version of the language from their parents.
But a new study, conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics at Nijmegen in the Netherlands, has found that it is not entirely foreigners and their sloppy ways that are to blame for languages becoming simpler. Merely being bigger was enough. The researchers, Limor Raviv, Antje Meyer and Shiri Lev-Ari, asked 12 groups of four strangers and 12 groups of eight to invent languages to describe a group of moving shapes on the screen. They were told that the goal was to rack up points for communicating successfully over 16 rounds. (They“talked" by keyboard and were forbidden to use their native language, Dutch.)
Over time both big and small groups got better at making themselves understood, but the bigger ones did so by crcating more systematic languages as they interacted, with fewer idiosyncrasies. The rescarchers suppose that this is because the members of the larger groups had fewer interactions with each other member, this put pressureon them to come up with clear patterns. Smaller groups could afford quirkierlanguages, because their members got to“know”cach other better.
Ncither the more systematic nor the more idiosyncratic languages were“better",given group size: the small and large groups communicated equally well. But the work provides evidence that an idiosyncratic language is best suited to a small group with rich shared history, As the language spreads, it nceds to become more
predictablc.
Taken with previous studies, the new research offers a two-part answer to why grammar rules are built- and lost. As groups grow, the need for systematic rules becomes greater, unlearnable in-group-speak with random variation won't do. But languages develop more rules than they need; as they are learned by foreign speakers joining the group. some of these get stripped away. This can explain why pairs of closely related languages - Tajik and Persian, Icelandic and Swedish, Frisian and English- differ in grammatical complexity. In each couple, the former language is both smaller and more isolated. Systematicity is required for growth. Lost complexity is the cost of foreigners learming your language. It is the price of success.
What is the main finding of the study conducted by Max Plank Institute?

A. Bigger groups of speakers tend to make the language system simpler.
B. It is the foreign people learning that language makes it become simpler.
C. The small groups got better at communicating with each other at the end.
D. Members in bigger groups have more chances to interact with each other.

资料:What if you were told there was a way you may strengthen your cognitive skills and heighten your intelligence, and all you had to do was was learn to strike up basic conversations in another language?
It probably sounds great, because if you’re like most you would love to be able to speak a second language. But then, you recall your experience in high school foreign language-boring tote memorization and long hours with little progress-and perhaps it doesn’t sound so good any more.
But, what if you were told it would take only 10 days to be on your way to becoming bilingual? Most people recognize the many benefits of learning a foreign language: You can travel to foreign countries and fell comfortable, be a more productive and enticing employee in today’s competitive job market, and immerse yourself in the vast cultures that surround you.
But now, the collective evidence from a number of recent studies suggests that the bilingual experience improves the brain’s so-called executive function-a command system that directs the attention processes that we use for planning, solving problems, and performing various other mentally demanding tasks.
These processes include the ability to ignore distractions to stay focused, switching attention willfully from one thing to another, and holding information in the mind-like remembering a sequence of directions while driving.
Even better, new approaches to learning mean you can learn a new language without the endless repetition, homework, and memorization. One of the most powerful actually trains people to start speaking a new language in as little as 10 days! In fact, it’s so powerful, even the FBI has purchased it!
